Can You use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to Clean Electronics ?

Can You use 70% Isopropyl Alcohol to Clean Electronics ?

Isopropyl alcohol (IPA) is commonly used for cleaning electronics due to its effectiveness and availability. Let’s address your questions:

  1. Is 70% Isopropyl Alcohol Safe for Electronics?

Thermal Printer Pre-saturated IPA Cleaning Swab

Lint free, non-abrasive, and pre-saturated with 99.7% IPA (isopropyl alcohol), the foam tips will thoroughly but gently clean delicate parts.

    • Yes, 70% isopropyl alcohol is considered safe for cleaning electronics.
    • However, if you’re working with circuit boards or other electrical components, it’s better to use a higher percentage (99.9%) to avoid leaving behind water residue and impurities.
    • While 70% can work for cleaning adhesive off metal or plastic surfaces, be cautious not to spill it onto circuits or wires.
    • However, using lower concentrations of isopropyl alcohol may corrode some sensitive electronic components and should be avoided unless absolutely necessary. Therefore, avoid using the 70% solution on any circuit boards or other sensitive electronic parts.
  1. Why Use Isopropyl Alcohol for Cleaning Electronics?

    • IPA has several advantages:
      • Dissolves oils, adhesives, soldering flux, residues, fingerprints, and contaminants.
      • Leaves no oils or traces, unlike many ethanol compounds.
      • Evaporates quickly (above 60°F).
      • Relatively non-toxic (in a well-ventilated area).
      • Disinfects viruses and bacteria (at 60/70% concentrations).
      • Mixes with water and evaporates, preventing corrosion damage from liquid spills on electronics.

Remember, always handle IPA carefully, and avoid using acetone directly on electronics due to its strength and potential harm to components. Water and vinegar are suitable for external surfaces but should be applied with care. If you have specific cleaning needs, feel free to ask! 😊

Understanding Evolis Print Head Failures and Maintenance Tips

Understanding Evolis Print Head Failures and Maintenance Tips

Print head failure is one of the problems that may occur during the use of card printers, which may further cause printing quality issues and may also result in relatively high maintenance costs.
In this issue of the article, we will delve into the main causes of print head malfunctions and share some preventive measures.

What is a print head? How does it work in a card printer?

Video: How to clean Evolis Edikio Access printer?

Ensure your Edikio Access printer stays in top condition with regular maintenance. From removing the ribbon to using cleaning tools for the print head, follow these simple steps for optimal printing quality and longevity. Don’t forget, you can also perform cleaning procedures conveniently through the Edikio Print Center software.

The main reasons for Evolis print head failures include:

  1. Accumulation of dust or debris: Long-term lack of cleaning can lead to the buildup of dust or debris inside the printer, potentially causing scratches or blockages on the print head.
  2. Use of dirty cards: Using contaminated cards may introduce dust or dirt into the printer, increasing the risk of print head failures.
  3. Direct contact between the print head and chip: On direct-to-card printers, direct contact between the print head and the raised chip on the card can damage the print head.

To prevent and maintain Evolis print heads, consider the following:

  1. Regular cleaning of the printer: It’s advisable to perform a thorough cleaning of the printer every time you replace the printer ribbon. Regular cleaning helps prevent dust and dirt buildup, protecting the print head from damage. “T” shaped cleaning card
  2. Use of retransfer printers: Retransfer printers do not directly contact the card with the print head, reducing the likelihood of print head damage. Consider using this type of printer for chip card printing.
  3. Avoidance of second-hand equipment: Purchasing second-hand equipment carries risks, as you may not be fully aware of the repair history and condition of the device. Opt for new equipment whenever possible.
  4. Selection of printers with print head protection: Some models of Evolis printers come equipped with print head protection devices. These devices automatically protect the print head when the printer cover is open, preventing accidental shocks and scratches, and extending the printer’s lifespan and print quality.

Finally, the warranty policy for print heads may vary depending on the model of printer purchased. Refer to the specific warranty policy of your device for details.

Magicard Cleaning Kits

Here are the steps to clean a Magicard ID card printer:

  1. Preparation:
    • It’s strongly recommended to clean the printer every time you change the ribbon.
    • Use Magicard’s dedicated cleaning card, which effectively removes dust, debris, and residue from the printer’s internal rollers.
  2. Cleaning the Card Path and Transport Rollers:
    • Press the “MENU” button, select “Clean Rollers” from the menu, and then press “OK” to proceed based on the printer’s prompts.
    • Remove the card hopper from the back of the printer.
    • Open the top cover of the printer and remove the ribbon. Ensure that the cover remains open.
  3. Using the Cleaning Card:
    • Open the packaging of the cleaning card and take out the cleaning card.
    • When the printer screen displays “Ready to Clean,” press the “Yes” button and insert the narrow end of the cleaning card into the horizontal slot at the front of the printer. The printer will automatically take the cleaning card into the internal mechanism for cleaning. Once cleaning is complete, the card will automatically eject.
  4. Optional Second Cleaning:
    • If prompted by the printer screen for a second cleaning, you can remove the card, flip it over, and repeat the cleaning process.

These steps will help improve the print quality of the printer and ensure stable card feeding. Remember to perform this cleaning process regularly to maintain optimal printer performance.
